Acai Berry Bowl for the Win

Reaching a certain age is never easy. Now that I am pushing 50, a myriad of health problems have weaseled their way into my pre-menopausal life and have turned it upside down. My kitchen counter looks like a pharmacy. My first CT scan is scheduled for next week. I started taking statins for cholesterol and pre-diabetes, and unknown abdominal issues are entertaining me with their energetic leaps and pirouettes beneath my skin. I bought a pill sorter, for goodness sake. In short, I’m nearly 50.

Amidst all of this, I’m happy and loved with no shortage of activities. My long-term boyfriend/partner is a successful journalist; we live in beautiful sunny California after living 7 years on the tropical island of Maui; we have annual passes to Disneyland; I’m a rockin’ home cook; and we have two precious kitty cats who won’t let us out of their sight. Life is good, but now it’s time to get my health back on track, so I can keep on living a good life.

In my quest to get healthy, I recently discovered the tasty pleasure of acai bowls. I know, I know, I’m a bit late to the game, but I was never one to jump into trends, but I now wish I had jumped on the bandwagon years ago. Not only was my first bowl super-filling, but I felt great after I finished it. Energetic, happy, satisfied. On my way home from work, I purchased the ingredients to make my own. The past two days, I’ve enjoyed a healthful breakfast of acai, chopped fruit, and low fat vanilla and blueberry granola.

If you are watching your sugar intake like I am, acai bowls are not an everyday thing; but for a few days out of the week, give it a shot! Mix it up with a variety of fresh fruit and toppings. Sprinkle coconut flakes or toasted walnuts. There is no limit, so go wild!
